Hair Report: I used the setting lotion in a 3 parts water to 1 part lotion ratio, which seemed to work as well as the mousse. The verdict on mousse vs setting lotion so far is: they're equally good, but I prefer the setting lotion because the liquid is easier to distribute and less messy.
I'm also learning just how long it takes my hair to dry in sponge rollers at different levels of wetness. It seems to work best if my hair is clean and dry to start, then I lightly spray each section with setting lotion right before rolling it. The ends must be barely damp or it takes over 12 hours to dry completely.
Lipstick: I love my Mary Kay Cinnamon Twist lipstick, but it has to be reapplied often, and it isn't pin up girl red. I'll still use it on occasion but I wanted something red and long lasting.
This experiment used 3 different brands of long lasting lip color, which I purchased at the drug store. This is what they have in common:
*They were all nearly identical in color, even though each had a different name for their brand's shade.
*The color saturation was equally good for each brand.
*Each of them was equally sticky when wet, and the dried texture took some getting used to.
*They don't go on like creme lipsticks because you only use one coat, the liquid spreads, you don't use a lip pencil, you don't rub your lips together, or blot.
*Slip ups are easily remedied while the product is still wet.
*None of them lasted a full 24 hours.
*Each was applied according to the directions and worn all day without reapplication.
*I wore each brand for 3 days in a row, to account for humidity, heat/cold, more eating or kissing than normal, etc.
Cover Girl 24 Hour Outlast: After about 2 hours it started to "pill" on my lips. The product formed very small annoying balls that I ended up scraping off with my teeth, and ultimately using a tissue to remove all I could. I couldn't wait to get home from work to remove the residue. This application uses two separate tubes. One is the color, and the other is a clear moisturizing top coat, which means more stuff to have to find in my purse.
Final vote: NO
Revlon Colorstay Ultimate: This one doesn't come with a moisturizing top coat, even though it leaves my lips feeling parched like the other two brands. I couldn't stand the dry feeling so I used chapstick as a top coat on day three. The chapstick did not make a difference in how the product fared. All three days it took about 4 hours for this one to start pilling on my lips, and the pills were a cross between little balls and flakes. Final Vote: NO
Maybelline Super Stay 24 Color: This color is 035 Keep It Red. There's a slight learning curve for applying all these lip colors, but this one especially because the formula is a little thinner than the other two. It's a little disconcerting at first because it feels like a thin coat of lip gloss. This one never flaked, pilled, or smudged. It lasted about 6 hours looking very good. After that the color starts to wear off on the inside of the lips, leaving a gradually darker color toward the outer lips. Reapplying once during the day would easily make this an all day lip color. I did not reapply because of the experiment. There was still some color on the outer lips when I removed my makeup after 14 hours. One big downside to the packaging is the teeny tiny color number/name sticker on one end of the tube. I suppose Maybelline expects us to actually remember the shade number from the box that gets thrown away after purchase, or have bionic vision to read the sticker. But the upside to the packaging is the double ended one piece tube. The color is on one end and the clear moisturizing top coat is on the other end, making this much easier to fish out of a purse. This one is a keeper, and it's the color in all my photos after week 1 of my Jump into Vintage series. Final Vote: YES.
Also this week, I found Miss H a gorgeous dress at the thrift store for $5.00, that fits her perfectly. It's a sleeveless 50's style number with a lovely pleated skirt.
She instantly came up with 3 different looks for it:
